I don't think there's anything grisly about collecting the sun-dried, weather-worn bones of birds, fish, fowl and other creatures. They often don't look like much when I pick them up off the sandy beach, but when taken home, cleaned up and positioned under some good light, those contoured shapes and creamy, beige, off-white colors carry some real depth. I think of where they came from and how they landed in my possession and how - in the context of this photograph - they seem to take on a new life. I borrowed the title of this piece from a terrific instrumental composition by two outstanding musicians, Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge.
