One of my favorite beaches is known, only to me, as the place to find smoothed-over pieces of petrified black coal. At least that's what I think they are. Over time, as I collected more and more of them, the Billy Joe Shaver song "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal" came to mind. I finally thought of a design that could showcase these pieces in a way that amplified their pitch black color while allowing the light to reflect off their shiny surfaces, as if they're emerging and coming out of the darkness.
