This piece began with the broken candle and worked its way to the left, the right and then the top. None of these objects had any relationship to each other until they filled up the center of this square, at which point I began to examine the final layout and started to see the stories behind the people who brought them to the beach: folks playing cards, men trying to catch fish, children blowing bubbles, kids carrying buckets of sand, late night partiers drinking tequila and shooting off fireworks, gamblers rolling dice, someone keeping score, thirsty boys gulping down sweet drinks, curious divers searching underwater, tired moms making sandwiches, music lovers listening to their tunes, little girls wearing barrettes, a young couple sharing a bottle of sangria and a middle-aged man smoking a Tiparillo and looking out across the lake at the horizon.
