Most of the peach pits I find are on a beach near an embankment where fishermen gather in the early morning hours. My keen sense of deduction tells me that the two things are related, that the fisherman are out there eating peaches and tossing the pits into the water. By the time I find them they've been stripped clean and baked by the sun, leaving them with the appearance of a petrified fossil.
